The Recharge | On Becoming a Board Member & Personal Growth Strategies

Our guest encourages young leaders to join a board early in their careers. Why? To become a better operator and leader.

Our next guest is no stranger to the CAP STRAT Women’s Forum – You might remember her from our past virtual event Keys to Landing a Paid Board Position. She’s truly a role model for business leaders early in their careers. Meet Sally Washlow, an accomplished Board member and former CEO with extensive experience in public and private companies.

Adept at driving product innovation, market expansion, and organizational change, Sally brings her leadership and cross-functional skills to boards. Sally is the President of the Private Directors Association Chicago Chapter and is on the Board of Industry Leaders for the Consumer Technology Association. She is a member of the Women Corporate Directors and the National Association for Corporate Directors. She is one of the Practice Leads for Lee Hecht Harrison’s International Center for Executive Options (ICEO), serving the Midwest geographic area.

Today, Sally serves on boards for public and private companies in various capacities, including Board Chair, Compensation Committee Chair, Nominating and Governance Committee Chair, and Audit Committee member.

In this episode, Sally shares:

  • How to become a member of a paid public, private, or nonprofit board
  • How she learned leadership sitting around the dinner table
  • How boredom inspired her courage and curiosity
  • The importance of pursuing board membership early in your career

“Lean on those you meet along the journey to support you.” – Sally Washlow

By the way, Sally was on our panel of experts offering strategies and valuable insight about landing a position on a paid board role.  Watch the replay:  Landing a Board Seat:  What No One’s Telling You!
